Beauty and Skincare Haul Overview, January-July 2017

Hey, Guys! So I haven’t really been keeping up too well on the blog with the few hauls I’ve had this year, but figured why not just catch up in a lump sum? I buy products here and there but not nearly as much makeup as you might think for being a beauty blogger-at least maybe compared to others in the beauty community or even myself when I was in my twenties. It’s just not something I do regularly, unless it’s something I need, run out of and want to replace, or want to try (after giving it some serious thought). It comes and goes in spurts.  I have cycles where I’m buying more in a period, and then a lot less or pretty much nothing for a month or more. Just how I roll!

Beauty Haul 2017, January- July

So basically I’m a lot more comfortable talking about empties and using what I already have nowadays. But I still thought it would be fun to share with you all of the beauty and skincare products I’ve purchased since January-yes, January, so this may seem like a lot. This year I decided to keep track of these purchases in a bullet journal so it was much easier to remember everything. While I’m all about using up and enjoying what I already have and minimizing when necessary, it’s just fun and refreshing to update the stash here and there if I want to try something new. No shame in feeding your creative side, passion or hobby- that’s what I say! So without further ado, let’s get started!

Hair Stuff

Shea Moisture
Shea Moisture

I do own and like some Shea Moisture products but I hear good things about their other stuff so I wanted to give their Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen and Grow Shampoo and Conditioner a try (why do these names have to be so long?!). I like the idea of no sulfates. I’ve used this duo a few times and enjoyed it. I expected more of a pungent smell since it has apple cider vinegar but surprisingly these have a warmer, sweeter scent. I don’t feel like these strip my hair. You may want to try these too if you have color treated hair or damaged hair and want to avoid sulfates.

Skincare.

I want to mention that I am starting to change my diet around a bit to see if my skin improves (I am acne-prone and this summer has been a bit brutal for that), so any acne product mentioned is in conjunction with me changing up my diet by eliminating dairy.

I love the Simple Micellar Wipes! No crazy smells and these leave my skin feeling so clean! The other ones I used drove me crazy with the scent and I always felt they left a film behind. Not these. They are awesome. I thank YouTuber Kathleen Lights for getting me into these!!

Pictured next to the wipes are two serums, Boots No. 7 Lift & Luminate Triple Action and Avon Anew Power Serum– I want products that will do my skin favors, especially now that I’m in my thirties. I like the Boots a tad bit more again because it’s a little less scented than the Avon and I think it’s a little less tacky and dries faster, but the Avon one isn’t bad either. I’ve enjoyed using them and I could see myself using serums in the long run for their added benefits, whether it’s these or others.

I bought the The Neutrogena Oil-free Moisturizer for Acne to use when my skin flares up. I like using it here and there but only when I need to. While I don’t normally love heavily scented products on my face, I can tolerate this grapefruit scent every once in a while.

On the bottom left- Burts Bees Dark Spot Corrector for any zit aftermath that needs to be addressed. I’ll have to use it a bit longer to see if it makes a huge difference. Next to that is Differin, for treating acne. As mentioned earlier, I am prone to breakouts and go through cycles of clear skin then hormonal acne. I probably gave up on Differin too soon (I used it for a few weeks) because I was breaking out even more. Not sure if it was the Differin or if my diet or something else was the cause, but I stopped. I may go back to it again but I do not like the purging phase at all, if this is in fact was caused it! I don’t even care if purging is a necessary in the clearing up process, it’s just aggravating.

I’ve enjoyed The Garnier Ultra-Lift Miracle Sleeping Cream (the dark blue tube). It’s more of a gel than a cream but I do think it helps keep puffiness down and is nice to apply at night as part of my regimen.

The last three shown are toners that I rotate based on need (or mood). I like using them to balance out my skin and remove traces of makeup that may not have washed off, dead skin cells, or whatever else. The Rose Water by Poppy Austin is nice because it’s pure and really leaves my skin feeling refreshed. I know the Pixie Glow Tonic is a cult favorite but honestly I don’t see a huge difference when I use it- no amazing glow as many claim, but it does remove leftover residue. The Proactiv toner is kinda on the same path as the Pixie- a nice product but I don’t think it does a whole lot on it’s own. Earlier in the year I really thought these made a difference since my skin was so clear, but my skin made a turn for the worst this summer and these haven’t helped or prevented anything. While I’ll probably always have a toner of some sort in my skincare routine and liked using each of these for a time, I’m not sure which one I’d continue to get and I’d probably only need one.

Bath and Body Products

Bath and Body
Bath and Body

I’ve been in the mood for a milder, more mellow scented lotion and for some reason have been feeling very vanilla! I went with this large C. Booth 4 in 1 Vanilla Butter from Ulta which is quickly absorbed and smells just lovely- not too strong, but still there. The next two are travel sizes of the Ulta 3-in-1 Smoothies which I love and used up before. These are in Buttercream Cupcake and Hibiscus Punch and smell sooo good. While I haven’t tapped into these just yet, I’d only use them as bubble bath or shower gel, not a shampoo. The Avon Senses shower gel in Vanilla I purchased again for that mellow vanilla scent but as a shower gel, and I’ve enjoyed using it since I bought it this year.

Lush Stuff

Lush
Lush

My excuse for the Lush haul (not that you need one) is that we had our tub re-glazed and I can now finally take baths! I never used to but heck, when you get a new tub it’s just mandatory. I’m too lazy to go through the names of each Lush product (bad blogger, I know) but I enjoyed the bath bombs and soap. I used the robot one for my son’s bath. While you can definitely smell the difference in scents with each product, their products to me overall have that similar effervescent Lush scent, which is great mind you, but yeah. If you tried Lush you have to know what I’m talking about. Looking forward, I’ll probably indulge in some Lush stuff here and there- I love their vibe. But while I think they’re fun and smell so nice, I don’t think they’re a necessity in my bath routine. I’d love to try some of their bubble bars and shower gels though!

Foundation/Face Products

Foundation and Face Products

Typical me, I like to try different formulas and products and this came through in my foundation purchases and brow products this year. I don’t like having too many foundations in my stash but I’ve heard a lot about Maybelline Fit Me so wanted to give it a shot. The Maybelline Fit Me Matte and Poreless Foundation for normal/oily skin is pretty nice, just not as mattifying or as long-lasting as my L’oreal Infallible foundation in terms of breaking down mid-day. Oily gal probs.

The Maybelline Fit Me Stick isn’t bad but I kinda don’t like how it feels on my skin. It applies more moist but ends up feeling kinda dry and powdery as you wear it, which you’d think as an oily gal I would like, but I don’t that much. I’ll use it up but not repurchase. The Sonia Kashuk contour sticks are nice and not as intimidating to use after all, just haven’t used them much this year. I did a full review of the NYX Pro Foundation Mixerhere, the Tarte Shape Tape, ABH Dipbrow, NYX Cake Powder and Laura Mercier Translucent Powder and Milani Make it Last Spray here, and the Makeup Revolution Iconic LightsPalettehere so check those out!

Eyes and Lips

I always hear about ColourPop and had to try some of their shadows! These are really beautiful and the pigmentation is fabulous. I use my fingers to apply. I bought the shades I Heart This, Birthday Girl, Mooning, and Get Lucky, and the lip color in Magic Wand (it’s an OK color, not a love just yet but I’ll keep playing with it). The Ulta shadow crayons can go on a little unevenly but if you play around they’re actually pretty nice and pigmented, so overall I do like them.

The NYX lip liners I wanted to try wearing as lipsticks since I see that done often and it’s supposed to be matte and so long wearing. I will say these can be a little drying if used as a lipstick, but they do stay put. I love the NYX Lip Lingerie in Push Up- I just love this shade of nude on me.

Flower Beauty is sold at Walmart and I needed to add something to get free shipping, so I remember hearing about this Flower Beauty Lip Radiance gloss again from Kathleen Lights and decided to get it- and I love it! It’s in the shade Autumn Rose and it’s very pretty-it’s not too much, but polished and brings that hint of color. You’ll notice a small container of NYX Glitter which I think is in Bronze. I usually swear off glitter but have seen so many beautiful (not tacky) looks on YouTube and wanted to give it a try at some point. I’ve tried the NYX Glitter Primer once and thought it was good. I’d have to use it more to really see how it works with more fallout-prone shadows.

These are pretty much beauty tools that had their own category. I ran out of my Essie gel setter top coat and figured buying a cheap $1.00 top coat would be fine. Nope. I tried the Wet ‘N Wild Top Coat and wasn’t impressed at all. I heard about the Seche Viche Quick Dry Top Coat that had great reviews and I totally agree!! It’s really good and totally worth it. My nails don’t chip as much at all and the shine is so nice and stays for days.

The next is the Real Techniques Setting Brush. I credit yet another YouTuber, Coffee Break With Dani, for getting me to try this. She uses it for contouring which was my main intention, but I actually really like it for highlighting. I’m pretty sure you can use it for a million other things though. It’s a really nice brush.

Last but not least, a teasing comb. I forget the brand but I got it from Ulta. I didn’t really buy it for teasing but more for making a part in my hair. Honestly this is one of those things I didn’t really need at all but always wanted to have.

Ok guys that about sums up all the beauty products I’ve purchased so far in 2017! I’m trying to decide if I want to do haul posts more frequently on my blog or do a whole bunch at once. Maybe by season? I’ll see how it goes and how much I end up buying the rest of this year! Never want to underestimate myself haha. Hope you enjoyed!

What was your favorite thing(s) that you purchased so far in 2017??

Love always, Jen Xx

    1. Thanks Alexandra!! I love that we use similar products-that will come in handy when I need a recommendation since we probably have the same tastes in products! 😊

    1. I totally get the hype on Colourpop now! Shape tape is pretty good- if you ever do get it, a little goes a long way!! Thanks for stopping by Jonia!
