Now and again I like to add a touch of bold color to my lids via eyeliner or a hint of shadow. I think it breaks up the monotony of my typical browns, blacks or neutral liners and I just love playing around with different colors!
Cobalt blue has been a popular shade in both fashion and beauty, but trend or not, I think this shade is just stunning on nails and eyes. With bolder colors I tend to do just a hint when it comes to makeup-enough to make it seen but not so much that it’s clownish (if you’re down with clown, go for it. You do you). But what I love about some bold liners is that it can be really obvious if you want it to be, or only noticeable if you look closely depending on how you wear it.
I originally wanted to get a NYX cobalt liner that I’ve been seeing on Pinterest or just around online, but since my local drugstore didn’t carry it or have it in stock (shocker) and I really just needed that eye color in my life immediately, I decided to go with the Maybelline Lasting Drama Waterproof gel liner pencil in lustrous sapphire. The price ranges from 6.99-8.00+, depending where you go.
I stay pretty neutral with my eyeshadow when I use any bold liners so it helps the liner pop a little more and so it doesn’t look so over-the-top, so I’ll wear a brownish nude shadow on my lid and I’ve done a brown eyeliner on the bottom lash line. Because again, while I love color, I want to emphasize my eyes, not make them super distracting (in a bad way). I wouldn’t be opposed to using this all around the eye, but the brown on the bottom seems to be my preference lately with this since it can be so bold.
Here is a picture of me wearing it on my upper lash line. Yes, I threw a filter on this picture but the filter really helps you see how it actually looks in real life. The normal lighting was way too dark to get just how blue it looks on:
And here are some swatches to get an idea of the intense color:
Pros: I was pleasantly surprised at how pigmented this went on! And though I’ve only worn it on my upper lash line, I love how it lasted throughout the day. I did use an eye primer but there was no smudging or feathering, and it still looked as fresh on at the end of the work day as it did when I put it on. Also, when I tried to take the swatch off my hand after it sat for a few seconds, it Would. Not. Budge. That’s pretty impressive if you ask me! I’m pretty confident it would stay put on my lower lash line or without a primer, but I’d have to try and see for myself at some point. I love this shade and think it’s pretty flattering- can’t speak for all eye shades but for dark eyes I love it!
Cons: Not too many, but since this is a gel liner the pencil wears down easily and I find myself having to sharpen it sooner than I would a regular eyeliner. Also, if you like to draw sharper lines or wings/cat eyes it may be harder with this pencil formula, so a potted gel liner or a liquid liner used with a brush may be better for that.
Would I buy it again/Overall Thoughts: I would definitely get this again- and I’m considering getting it in the purple and green shades. The color is just beautiful- noticeable but not in a weird or intimidating way. Fun for spring but really you could wear it all year!
