Greetings again, Beauts! Hope your December is treating you well. So far this month’s been a little bumpy in terms of some unexpected family circumstances (everyone’s doing ok), so between that and trying to prepare for the holidays it’s been a little bit of a roller coaster! Somehow I still have a bit of Christmas cheer in me and found a moment to do some blogging, even with the challenges.
I’ve done some E.L.F. hauling lately and part of my haul included a few of their matte lip colors. I’ve been in a very red-lips kinda mood (appropriate for this time of year I guess!) and wanted to expand my red lipstick stash a bit. I usually wear red for special occasions though I’m starting to wear it more often to work or out in general. I decided E.L.F. was an inexpensive way to go a little nuts! I got these through their website and was able to get them at half off during one of their big holidays sales, bringing them to $1.50 a piece! Not bad at all!
According to the package, it is “Smooth, pigment-rich color” that “glides on effortlessly and provides long lasting matte color.” It also states “enriched Vitamin A, C, & E formula helps moisturize and hydrate lips.”
I bought three different red shades in this line: Wine, Cranberry, and Rich Red. Here are my thoughts on these shades in particular and the lip product overall!
Wine has a rosier undertone than the other two. It’s a rich shade and I’d say the name is pretty appropriate- if red wine stained your lips or got on a white napkin, this is probably how it would look! I like this color the most because it has that almost rosy-dark magenta undertone, a little different than normal reds I have. Definitely a dressy and beautiful color:
Cranberry is a darker red color, almost leans towards a brick red shade but not quite as brown. To me this is the most “Christmas red” of the three- on the darker side but not so vamp-y. The name definitely suits the shade. This pic wasn’t taken in natural light but I hope it gives you an idea of how it looks on:
Rich Red was actually the brightest/lightest of the three, so I don’t quite get the name. I would call this “dance recital” red because it reminds me of what I would have worn on stage when I was younger. That might sounds a little scary but I don’t mean it that way at all- I think it’s a fun shade that’s still wearable. When you first apply it almost looks pink, but as you build it up it really starts to pop red. I like it!
Here are some swatches on my arm in natural daylight, then on white paper if you wanted to make any comparisons:
Formula: definitely matte, but not terribly drying or any more drying than I expected.
Application: Pretty Easy! I really like that it has a slimmer (but not too slim!), pointed tip so it helps with more precise application. I didn’t need to line my lips with a liner (I normally don’t anyway) but that slimmer, pointed tip makes it so much easier to get in that cupid’s bow area!
How it feels: Relatively comfortable! Not crumbly on me and didn’t make my lips that dry compared to other brands I’ve used. It is matte so you can expect some dryness, but not uncomfortably so.
Staying Power: Not super great but not a big deal in my opinion. It can wipe off pretty easily and there’s definite fading after a little while. But even after some fading it leaves a bit of a stain so it’s not super obvious. I didn’t mind reapplying after meals or during a break!
Packaging: Long sturdy black tube, snaps closed. Comes with a sharpener on the end!
Would I get it again? Yes. I think the quality is pretty good for what you pay! Even if I have to reapply, it’s totally fine. I love these shades and would love to try out other colors!
Have you ever tried these or were looking to? What are your thoughts on these or red lips in general?
