Greetings all! Hope you are all doing well! I’ve been on a hunt for different makeup items lately like a new higher-end foundation and more recently a pretty neutral eyeshadow palette or two.
I’ve tried what seems like way too many (underwhelming) foundations in a small amount of time, but always had this one in mind-I saw an ad in InStyle for this Maybelline powder called Superstay Better Skin that caught my eye. I decided now was a good time to check it out, plus I also found a coupon for it (more incentive)!
So is this a powder foundation? A setting powder? According to the ad, it “Covers like foundation, controls shine all day, looks like your skin, only better.” Well! Sounds exactly like what the doctor ordered! So even though this isn’t marketed as a foundation, just that it “covers like” one, I’m definitely using it that way since it seems to be more of a foundation than other products I have that aren’t nearly as substancial. All of the YouTube videos seemed pretty promising too. I purchased mine in the shade Warm Nude which seems to fit my MAC NC35 skin tone pretty well.
Packaging: This powder comes in a slim, rectangular compact divided into two sides. The top opens up to a decent-sized mirror. There is .32 oz of product.
Price: I found this one at CVS for $10.99, but other retailers sell it for a little cheaper. Again, coupons and deals help as well.
Application: This comes with a little sponge which I actually haven’t used. I usually like to use brushes for powders like this like my E.L.F. or Real Techniques buffing brush or something similar.
Finish: Mattifying, but does not look dry or cakey! I can honestly say that this makes my skin look airbrushed- pores are blurred out and my skin looks very smooth and satiny (that’s a word, right?).
Coverage: I wouldn’t call this a full coverage powder- I did have to use concealer. However, it does blur imperfections more than my other powder foundations, so that is impressive! Here is a before and after using Maybelline Better Skin powder. I used concealer on some dark spots, but I’m still impressed with the overall finish:
Wearability: I was really impressed with how well this held up on my skin even after a few hours! Usually most foundations break down and I get shiny and have to blot, but this still looked really fresh on me throughout the work day-I was really blown away!
Other thoughts: This powder contains salicylic acid so if you tend to get that occassional breakout, this could benefit you. However, if you’re on the dry side or are sensitive to salicylic acid, you may want to try a different foundation or wear it less often. As much as I like this powder, I do switch products out of fear my skin may dry out and get flaky in certain spots.
Would I Get it Again? YES!! For anyone with normal/oily skin, I say go for it! I was really delighted that a drugstore foundation was able to deliver on its claims and hold up so well, and it really does look lovely on! Part of me feels like I can give up my liquid foundation hunt for a bit since I found this, even though this is a powder! So glad I gave this a try!
As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts! Have you tried this foundation or are you looking for something along these lines? Do share!
