I hauled some beauty products over the span of August and couldn’t wait to do some test driving! Little by little I’ll be reviewing them to see how I feel. Figured I would start with these two Maybelline products I had the chance to wear a few times:
Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara, $9.99 at CVS. I saw some gals using this on YouTube so I thought I’d see for myself how it would work! I bought mine in I believe blackest black (I threw out the packaging and of course the name is not written anywhere on the tube) in the regular formula, not waterproof.
The wand: curved brush that has longer bristles on the top of the arch, and shorter on the bottom.
Here is my “before mascara” picture! I wasn’t blessed with long lashes at all, as you can see:
How it applied: I’ve used this without an eyelash curler. I start at the base of my lashes and wriggle up a few times, doing a rolling-up-and-out action. I didn’t experience any clumping, and it applied smoothly.
End Result: After applying 1-2 coats, I can say that my lashes looked defined and separated, slightly thickened, and appeared fanned out and curled (with some finagling- remember this is without a lash curler!).
I wouldn’t say the results were really dramatic, but you can definitely see definition, separation and curl more from the side. From straight on it looks like I’m wearing mascara but would probably need to use an eyelash curler to really make my lashes stand out.
Other things to note: When washing off, it came off in clumps- almost like how tubing mascaras wash off. I haven’t read anywhere that this is a tubing mascara (and it certainly doesn’t lengthen like one), but found that interesting! I didn’t mind it though- and almost liked that as opposed to just dissolving and coming off like other mascaras. Also, it can get a little messy applying since the brush is a little more spread out and wide, so be careful. It is also a wetter formula so be careful since it can get smudgy.
Would I get it again? Possibly. I think this is a much nicer mascara than their Great Lash mascara or their Colossal one. The results for me were satisfying even without a curler, and I’d love to try it again after using one. Again, it is a little wet and can be prone to smudging, so that is something to watch out for.
Maybelline Color Jolt in Stripped Down, 9.99 at CVS
As you have seen in an earlier post, I had quite the stash of lip products that I tossed. Newly motivated to try some newer lip products, I decided to turn on the whole matte lip trend for a moment and go back to something creamier since my lips crave moisture. Something with more pigment, applies like a gloss but with more substance. Maybelline’s Color Jolt line seemed to fit the bill. I chose the shade Stripped Down, a mauve-y pink nude shade. Color Jolt has a doe-foot applicator:
Results: Feels creamy and comfortable on. My lips felt moisturized, looked fuller and healthier. it didn’t settle into lines, and the color went on evenly. There is a shine but it’s not super glossy. I found that it was still visible on my lips after taking a drink, maybe because it’s pretty pigmented. Though I wouldn’t necessarily call it long-lasting since a lot of it can come off at once, but the color lasted a little longer than I expected even with a lot of it coming off somehow.
Would I get it again? Again, possibly. I really like the color- this shade is “my lips but better,” gives a nice polished look, and feels great on. But for a drugstore lip product this seems a bit overpriced at 9.99 for .21 fl. oz. I would probably wait until I had a coupon or if there was a sale (or just go for a higher-end product since they’ll end up costing around the same), but since I like how it feels and how it looks on me, I wouldn’t say no! There are lots of color options in this line that I’d totally be interested in trying!
Have you tried either of these or are planning to? What are your thoughts?
